Education is a controversial topic in America. It is a part of the media, political debates, and our own personal debates. The children of this country are the future of what is to come, and teachers play a big role in giving their students what they need to know. This is essential not only to survive but also to thrive in this ever-changing world. A teacher has a tremendous amount of responsibility on his/her shoulders every day, and it is sometimes unimaginable all the situations that a teacher is faced with. How a teacher handles students and school situations reflect his/her own philosophy of education.
As a future educator, I believe it is important to teach students vital skills that are needed to be successful in society. These skills not only include academic ones, but also social and emotional ones. I am a very caring person who is ready to give students as much support, as they need to feel accepted and secure in this world. I feel this is especially important today because of the growing violence that is in our schools. I want to provide an environment that makes students feel as an important member of our community.
Academically, I believe that it is important to create a great deal of intrinsic motivation in students. Learning does not stop when we graduate from high school or college, but continues our entire lives. As a teacher, I believe it is important for students to know that I am still learning and how amazing it is to learn something new everyday. We are such important models for children that they internalize everything they witness us do. If teachers want students to be excited about science, math, and any other subject they must be excited themselves. I also believe that it is important for students to have a great deal of hands on experience. It has often been said that experience is the best teacher and I am a firm believer in it.
Overall I want to provide students with a role model that they can respect. I believe that if this is available, students will want to strive for respect and admiration themselves. Children today have a tough world to grow up in but I am positive that I have the ability to make a difference in a child's life. That difference is what my goal will be everyday that I am a teacher.
